SF Custom House Project Update

Some of you may have been wondering why I have not been posting any SF stuff since the last update on my Wildwood Home. To be honest, I have been really discouraged with my horrible painting skills and I think I might just abandon the project and get a new house instead.

Here's how my SF house looks like now:

I failed horribly in trying to create the uneven wood stain effect. I had followed this tutorial on how to achieve a wood on plastic; but for some reason, the oil stain mixed with thinner kept removing my base coat as I tried to go over it.

I just wish I had the talent to be creative like other people :(

  1. It is amazing! Seriously, it's very good :) The green windows look lovely against the wood background. I think it will look even better if you remove the white backing from the windows, though ;)

  4. I think the paint work looks worst in person so it makes me really sad just by looking at it. But thank you all for your kind comments ^^ I really appreciate it. I might try to fix it when I'm feeling better next time

  6. It's a good first go. :) Don't be discouraged! My first painting attempts didn't come out exactly the way I wanted either.

I find that just using paint alone is effective in creating a wood effect, you just need long, continuous strokes with a stiff brush and have a base coat underneath.

    1. Thank you Pei! I love your woodstain effects! They look so real. Does this mean I should only go over the base coat once and then let it dry?

  7. I tried to do a little video tut with a piece of paper bit my stiff brush tore up the paper. :P

    I found this instead: http://www.dolls-n-daggers.com/Dolls/Forum/index.php?topic=297.0

I do what he does, but without any of the glazes. All I use is acrylic paint and water, and then I paint or spray on a clear varnish over the top after I finish painting. I also only tend to use a really stiff paint brush for the texturing.

    1. Ah thank you so much for the link! It seems he used water instead of thinner to mix his paints so they don't remove the base coat at the same time. My paints are oil based like what the guy used in the tutorial I followed so I'm not sure if it's possible to mix it wither water instead

    2. No idea about oils. The only thing I use them for is to mix with resin or liquid polymer clay.

  8. Oil won't mix with water very well. This is why I love to use acrylics! :D
I really love the architecture design! Keep going! :D
